FORT SCOTT - Bourbon County voters turned down a proposal to make all USD 235 Board of Education positions at-large and elected Mike Hueston to the County Commission’s District 1 seat, according to unofficial results released Tuesday night by the county clerk’s office.

The USD 235 proposal failed 382-325, with 54% of those voting on the question opposed.

Hueston defeated Clinton L. Walker 618-199, taking about 75% of the vote. Joe Allen in District 3 and Commission Chairman Gregg Motley in District 4 ran uncontested in their races. Allen received 823 votes and Motley received 802.

Republicans carried the county in every contested partisan race. Rick James received 3,110 votes to Rob Hodgkinson’s 1,349 in the 4th District Kansas House race. In the 9th District State Board of Education race, Destry Brown received 3,599 votes to Heather Guernsey’s 934. Both districts extend beyond Bourbon County.

In Bourbon County, Ty Masterson received 71% of the vote for governor, Roger Marshall received 65% for U.S. Senate, Derek Schmidt received 68% in the 2nd Congressional District and Kris Kobach received 71% for attorney general.

County voters approved the constitutional amendment specifying that only U.S. citizens may vote in Kansas elections, 3,144-1,034. The amendment’s fate depends on the statewide tally.

District Court Judge Amy L. Harth was retained with 65% of the vote in the county. Voters also favored retaining both Kansas Supreme Court justices and all five Court of Appeals judges on the ballot.

Four township clerks were elected: Laura Krom in Drywood, Michael Ramsey in Marion, Donald Banwart in Scott and Jennifer Epting Williams in Timberhill. No candidate filed in Franklin, Marmaton, Millcreek, Osage, Pawnee or Walnut townships, where the seats were decided by write-in votes.

A total of 4,635 ballots were cast in the county.

The county’s state-required post-election audit is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, in the commission meeting room at the Bourbon County Courthouse, according to the county’s website. The audit is open to the public. A bipartisan election board will hand-count paper ballots in selected races and precincts to check the machine totals.

The county canvass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in the same room. The county board of canvassers will review provisional ballots and certify the county results.
