Hospital building sold to New York developer who now signs as KRI’s manager

After weeks of rumors about a New York buyer for KRI, newly filed documents show the hospital building was sold seven weeks ago - and Queens developer David E. Marx signing for both the buyer and KRI.

FORT SCOTT - A New York real estate developer now signs as manager of Kansas Renewal Institute LLC, and a company he controls owns the former Mercy Hospital building, according to documents recorded Tuesday at the Bourbon County Register of Deeds.

David E. Marx of Marx Development Group signed a $17.5 million mortgage Aug. 26 as manager of both KRI and 401 Woodland Hills KS Realty LLC, the building’s new owner. KRI’s address on the filings is Marx’s office in Flushing, N.Y., not 401 Woodland Hills Blvd.

None of the documents states that KRI itself was sold — a question that has circulated in Fort Scott since late September, when talk of a New York buyer for KRI surfaced around the same time Freeman Health System and KRI announced a nonbinding letter of intent to explore KRI taking over Freeman Fort Scott Hospital.

The deed and mortgage were signed Aug. 26, nearly four weeks before that Sept. 21 announcement, and seven weeks prior to being recorded with the Register of Deeds earlier this week.
