Bourbon County commissioners spent more than an hour at a Sept. 9 work session debating Commissioner David Beerbower's two-part plan: raise transfer station fees to fund employee raises, an equipment reserve and a closure reserve, and use federal disaster money to boost public works wages. Commissioners reached no agreement on either proposal.
Beerbower said he would bring motions to the commission's next meeting once the other commissioners had reviewed the plan. Chairman Gregg Motley was absent.
Customers pay tipping fees based on the amount of trash they bring to the transfer station, and those fees, rather than property taxes, fund its operations. The trash is then hauled to a landfill in Iola. Out-of-county customers currently pay $10 a ton more for household trash and $5 more for construction debris.
