And Now You Know

I love spending time with my grand and great grandkids! One great granddaughter, in particular, is either going to be a research scientist, a lawyer or an interrogator for the FBI. She has the best, most unusual questions! How does she even think of the questions she asks!!

Mother’s Day weekend we were all sitting on the porch enjoying the day, enjoying each other. Sitting in the chair next to me, she is studying me a bit. I knew something was coming, I just didn’t know what. Then it started.

“Mimi, why is your hair short like a boy’s?” I answer with something like, women can have short hair too or something.

A short while later, she asks, “why is your little fingernail so long? You need to cut your fingernails. They’re too long.” One must give an answer. This time I looked at my nails and had to admit they needed some attention. My fingernails grow fast and if I don’t file them each week they can start to look out of control. Other fun questions filtered in over the next hour.

Later in the day different family members came up in conversation, and as is customary, the little people are always listening. At one point she asks her grandma why she has two moms. One thing I appreciate is that everyone tries to answer the kids’ questions instead of brushing them off. The explanation ensued until she’d heard enough to understand and stopped us and said, so she’s your step mom. Whether she knew what that actually meant or not I do not know, but it answered her question. I don’t know that we’ve ever used that phrase in front of her because we just don’t use it much. That is not how I think of family.

Enjoy those questions from the kids! Just be sure you are giving an answer you don’t mind repeated for the next 10 years.

For the record, I cut my fingernails today.
